Butterfly Overhook Attacks with Sensei Diego Martins — A Last-Minute Sunday Workshop

Sometimes the best sessions are the ones you almost don’t get.

Earlier this past week, we managed to coordinate a private lesson with Sensei Diego Martins, a senior instructor with the Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu Association (B9) and Coach Patrick’s Judo instructor at Ipê Dojo, a fellow B9-affiliated academy. After seeing the quality and attention to detail Sensei Martins brings to the mats, there was no way we could let him leave town without getting him in front of our students. A few phone calls later, we had a last-minute workshop locked in for Sunday at 11:30 AM.

90 Minutes of Butterfly Overhook Attacks

The session ran a solid 90 minutes, focused entirely on butterfly overhook attacks. Sensei Martins broke the position down layer by layer  and everyone in the room, from newer students to our most experienced members, walked away with something new.

The highlight for many: most of our senior belts got the chance to try their hand on the mats with Sensei Martins directly. Eye-opening is the only way to describe it.

About Sensei Diego Martins

Sensei Martins is the Head Instructor of Kihon Dojo, a large B9 / Barbosa Jiu-jitsu -affiliated network of academies with a head branch located in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil. He’s known for his deep technical repertoire and complete martial arts approach, holding dual black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo under the esteemed Brazilian Martial arts legend Sensei Sadao Fleming.

That dual background showed in every detail of the workshop — the grips, the posture, the way he connected standing concepts to the ground game.

Grateful for Good People

As always, we’re really fortunate to have access to quality information — and more importantly, quality people. It was great to have Sensei Martins with us, and we’re very much looking forward to another visit.

A big thank-you also goes out to Sensei Jose and Anna of Ipê Dojo for making this possible. Your support and guidance are greatly appreciated.
