Shin slide options vs Knee Shield | Mississauga BJJ

Mississauga BJJ |May 9th- Reactions from the Knee Shield Position

Hey Team,

Quick recap from some content covered in the noon class last week — we were breaking down the reactions we often see from the knee cut position. And yeah, key concept here is looking at it from the view of position the happens along the way to a pass — not just a pass.

Most people who’ve trained for even a little while are going to give you something to deal with when you enter into a knee cut. One of the first and most common reactions? Knee shield. It’s a solid frame, and something we’ve got to expect and be ready for.

So instead of just thinking about getting the pass, we looked at what to do next when the person on bottom starts throwing up frames or pushing away.

Here are a couple of options that are simple to apply and tend to work well right away. There are small details that we’ll go deeper into during class, but this gives you a solid starting point. As always, hit us up if you’re stuck or not feeling it — we’ll point you in the right direction.

#1. When the Shin Slide Is Locked In

Once you’ve got the shin slide tight and your weight settled, they’re going to feel it. The bottom player is usually forced to react — often by pushing away or extending their legs to make space.

That’s your cue. When you feel that push, you’re in a great spot to complete the pass straight into side control. Don’t rush it. Be patient, stay heavy, and let their reaction open the door.

#3.Leg drag – Exposing the Back – choke

If you’re more movement-oriented, this one’s for you. You get that same knee cut position, but instead of just locking things down, you use your weight to isolate their legs and bait a reaction.

From there, you’ve got a great opportunity to step or jump around to the back, especially if they’re overcommitting to their frame. Once you get behind them, staple the legs and start setting up your grips — leg drag, seatbelt, collar — whatever fits your game.

We’ll go over this more in class, but just to give you the framework, here are three main goals we’re working toward from this position:

  1. Taking the back

  2. Getting inside hand control to pass to side

  3. Finishing with the Ezekiel choke — one of the highest percentage subs in the gi and available from more places than people realize.

#3. Quick Note on the Video

Yeah, the video got a bit messy — the background was noisy and audio quality wasn’t great. But don’t worry, we’ll be redoing those intro videos this week and giving you cleaner breakdowns moving forward.

This is just the starting point. The goal here is to give you something you can use right away, build off it, and layer on the details as you go.

Any questions, hit me up. See you on the mats.
