A lot of people are very disappointed and down right heartbroken , don’t get me wrong the aldo mcgregor fight is a interesting one but not one that shouldn’t naturally be taking place right now. Connor is a great fighter and actually a guy I called as an a-level competitor going a few years back after watchin him develop in the european fight scene.

Greatness or potential aside there is no doubt to the educated mma fan that Mcgregor 1000 percent skipped the line and has the Zuffa hype machine behind him.
(how does he get a title shot without fighting Edgar or Mendes and bypassing both and all wrestlers??)
A polarizing figure with the talk to back up much of what he is says Connor is a big favorite of the UFC brass in that he has a entire country behind him, and a clearly marketable character to the masses. All that aside I don’t care if you are ghost of Helio Gracie in this fight game you’ve gotta work your way up the ladder.
I understand the process and powers at work here as money talks, but didn’t like it when Brock Lesnar came and got his quick title shot either.
This while not the same exact deal isn’t very fair to the guys who worked their way into contention.
So after all this action what is my pick???
While I have been in the mma game since the very beginning in 1993/1994 and have participated in it at every level from fan to competitor to promoter to trainer to commentator, I won’t self proclaim myself an expert like many of talking heads you see in TV and the internet who know next to nothing.
Still people are asking so here is my opinion.
In Aldo vs Mcgregor I was picking Mcgregor as on average the level of striking in Europe is better than the North American or Brazilian mma circuit and he has enough athleticism to counter takedowns vs Aldo.
With Connor the better striker and Jose Aldo not really a “takedown’ guy but more a striking counter grappler on the feet and jiu-jitsu guy on the mats it makes for a poor role reversal for the champ.
The stlyes just match up poorly for Aldo in this case but Aldo beats guys I felt would give Mcgregor hell in the cage ala Frankie Edgar or Chad Mendes.
Two of mma’s best wrestlers that can also strike, Both guys are always knocking on the door for a title shot but match up poorly with Aldo’s insane grappling Defense.Mcgregor is a different style entirely!!!!
Yes there is a little video out of him counter wrestling a coach of partner of some type online and he looks good and definetly has an idea of what he needs to be doing but going back to their roots I just don’t that strong tradition of wrestling in western Europe.
Ireland is hardly Dagestan or Iowa where wrestling is a ingrained part of life so my bet is they have been keeping Mcgregor away from wrestlers and giving him time to develop that side of the game which is smart.Fate steps in and messes up the whole plan.
Aldo hurts his ribs and wisely pulls out of the fight in steps Chad mendes!!! A hard hitting super athletic takedown and ground and pound machine!! Hosestly could their be a worse matchup if you were prepping for jose aldo’s leg kicks suddenly you are facing this heavy handed takedown machine??

Mcgregor beats Aldo
Aldo beats Edgar
Mendes beats Edgar
Edgar beats Mcgregor (tough guy to train for as his approach to takedowns/striking is unique)
Last but not least
Mendes beat Mcregor…..
Lets see how it goes down at UFC 189

regardless of the outcome here the guy to watch at 145 is Joe duffy
ex proboxer with solid ground work wrestling and over striking he already has a submission win over Connor Mcgregor and is a legit threat to anyone else in the division. Counter wrestling stil to be tested but he is smart enough to be at tristar in montreal and the wrestling there at MWC and Tristar are both top notch.. sky is the limit for this guy
