Bjj Mississauga | Marcos Barbosa – One competitor that changed the game
Lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Rickson Gracie > Marcelo Behring > Waldomiro Perez > Roberto Godoi > Marco Barbosa
Ok so I’ve been a legit fanatic of the Bjj / Grappling arts for going on 20 years now. Occasionally i admit to rambling about this or that legendary match that many of you would have no method of seeing lol.
But this week was different, speaking with Kevin it dawned on me how much your teacher can affect the game you develop.
Of course everyone is their person and expresses Jiu-Jitsu differently when it is time to use it but the impact of a very underrated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend is coming to the light today with my focus on the influence of Marco Barbosa
Marcos Barbosa -> Lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Rickson Gracie > Marcelo Behring > Waldomiro Perez > Roberto Godoi > Marco Barbosa
A BJJ & Judo black belt this master of the arts was a major force for in development of BJJ tournament based passing and guard work in the late 90’s early 2000’s.
Based out of Sao Paulo he came to my attention in 1999 by smashing all the legends at his weight with a few simple techniques and a supreme passing base.
We were looking at the his sequences last week and will review Tuesday & Thursday this week but keep an eye some in action over the next few videos
1st here he is vs Fredson Alves “1990’s era legend and champion” known for his guard he got nothing started vs marco’s passing style
Fredson was a really high level competitor but the next match is a big deal.. Nobody beat Royler.
Royler Gracie was a consummate competitor who did it all gi/nogi & mma.. really dominated his weight class until retiring but this is one guy who had his number.
Putting Royler down establishing the setup we talked about and pressuring through the guard
A very big deal in the BJJ world at the time take a look below
Royler Gracie vs Maroca Barbosa BJJ Championship 1999
Try your best to make class and add the details to your game & check back later this week for the next post detialing the evolution in the guard made to shut down and neutralise the lightweight guard passing machine
