Best Martial Art for Kids Who Don’t Like Hitting | Mississauga

The Best Martial Art for a Kid Who Doesn’t Want to Hit Anyone

Not every kid wants to punch a pad or throw a kick, and that’s a completely reasonable thing for a parent to run into. If your child in Applewood, Dixie, or Cooksville has told you flat out “I don’t want to hit anyone,” you don’t have to force them into a striking class or give up on martial arts entirely. Grappling-based training gives your child a full, real self-defense skill set built entirely around control — no punches, no kicks, no contact strikes of any kind.

Why Karate and Taekwondo Aren’t the Only Options

Most parents start their search with karate or taekwondo simply because those are the names they know. Both are excellent disciplines, and plenty of kids thrive in them. But both are built on striking: punches, kicks, and blocks form the technical core of the curriculum. For a child who’s uncomfortable with that — whether from temperament, sensory sensitivity, or just a personal dislike of hitting — striking-based classes can feel like a poor fit from day one.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo work differently. Instead of striking, students learn to grip, secure position, sweep, escape, and control another person’s movement using leverage rather than force. A child never has to throw a strike to finish a technique or win an exchange.

What Kids Actually Learn in a Grappling Class

At Core BJJ & Grappling Academy in Mississauga, coaches walk kids through a curriculum built entirely around control, not contact:

  • Grip fighting — coaches teach students how to control an opponent’s sleeve, collar, or wrist to set up every other technique
  • Takedown defense — students drill how to sprawl, base out, and stay upright when someone tries to tackle or grab them
  • Positional escapes — coaches walk each child through hip escapes and bridging so they can get out from underneath a bigger, heavier opponent
  • Submissions and control holds — students learn to secure a dominant position and apply age-appropriate control techniques, always under direct coach supervision
  • Live rolling (age-appropriate) — once a student demonstrates the fundamentals, coaches pair them with a partner of similar size and skill to practice everything they’ve drilled, in a fully controlled, supervised setting

Every class is run by our experienced coaches  who correct grip and hand placement one student at a time, demonstrate each technique before drilling it, and track individual progress toward the next stripe or belt.

This Is A Big Deal For Bullying or Confidence Concerns

Parents searching for “self-defense for kids” are often responding to a specific worry: a shove in the hallway, a grab on the playground, a kid who freezes instead of getting away. Grappling directly answers that scenario. A child who’s been tackled or grabbed doesn’t need to know how to punch — they need to know how to base out, create space, and get back to their feet, which is exactly what Core BJJ drills every week.

A Program Built With Choice, Not One Path

Core BJJ & Grappling Academy is Mississauga’s only Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu (B9) certified training centre, connecting local students to a methodology practiced by a global network of more than 30,000 students. The academy runs its Kids BJJ program for ages 5 and up, and pairs it with karate classes under the same roof — so a family can register for either discipline or both, depending on what fits their child.

Older Students also choose between Gi and No-Gi training. Some kids take to the traditional uniform right away; others prefer training in athletic wear from day one. Coaches teach the same control-based curriculum either way, so a child never has to wear a gi they don’t want to in order to learn real self-defense.

Parents can watch from the viewing area at the academy’s 5,000-square-foot facility, which includes two matted training spaces built specifically for this kind of instruction.

Families who want to compete get full support  coaches build out a competition schedule,  and prepare students for local and regional tournaments. Families who just want their child to learn real self-defense and build confidence get the exact same instruction, with zero pressure to ever step onto a competition mat.
